| Growth & Change
These busy active children are experiencing rapid changes and facing challenges in the development of motor skills and coordination. They are learning and doing new things as they consider their place in the community. |
Like Timothy, children learn about Jesus through stories about his life and ministry. Asking questions and seeking answers leads to greater understanding. | As they hear stories of Jesus and the people he met, and stories about Solomon, children can reflect on and appreciate who they are and what they can do. | Jesus heard stories of God at work in the lives of people like Moses, Samuel and David. Jesus, too, grew and developed, becoming aware of his special role in the community. |
| Relationships &
Friendships
The skills of playing with others, rather than alongside them. are beginning to be learnt and valued. As they work more in groups they are developing their communication skills and coming to understand the give and take of friendship. |
Stories about people who were friends of God, like Daniel, Nathan and Mary of Bethany, help children learn more about being a friend. Jesus taught and showed what it means to forgive. | The reality of conflict in relationships and the development of friendship and team skills, are examined in stories of Jacob and Esau, and the Church. God’s provision for a child’s safety is seen in Joash’s story. | Children explore different aspects of friendship and communication as they hear stories about Matthew, Mary and Martha, and twelve special friends of Jesus. Stephen and Paul helped to tell the good news about Jesus. |
| Choice
‘Me first’, ‘I want…’, and ‘My turn!’ are catch-cries of these children, and reflect the attitudes that determine their choices. However, they are growing in awareness of other people’s needs and interests and are learning to consider issues of fairness, justice and problem solving. |
Making wise choices is not always simple or trouble-free, as Joseph and Daniel discovered as they learned to obey and to trust God. | Jesus had to make choices; so did Peter and John, Lydia and Luke. God’s Spirit helps people make the best choices, and a new start is possible. | The teaching of Jesus and his parables provide loving rules for behaviour, which many people choose to follow. |
| World & Others
The children are learning to care for themselves, others and their environment. An expanding awareness of their relationship to other people and the world encourages discovery and wonder. They enjoy celebrating with family, friends and the community. |
Stories of Creation, Easter and Christmas help children expand their understanding of their place in the world as unique, reflective beings who are loved by God. | The gifts of God in Creation, the Church and community together with festivals like Christmas and Easter, are all occasions for celebration. | The wonder and faithfulness of God are reflected and enjoyed in Creation and the rhythms of nature as children learn to care for the world. The seasons of Easter and Christmas are celebrated with delight. |
